This year’s Nobel Prizes are being presented in Stockholm and Oslo this week. On Tuesday, Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Anne Doudna were officially awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. On this occasion, Vilnius University decided to symbolically honour Prof. Virginijus Šikšnys, a scientist who was eligible for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry and deserved it for his achievements.
On December 9, 2020, on the eve of the Nobel Prize awards ceremony Vilnius will celebrate it by honouring one of the most prominent Lithuanian pioneers in life sciences – Prof Virginijus Šikšnys – whose contributions led to important discoveries in the Nobel Prize-worthy CRISPR-Cas9 technology. Vilnius is funding a scholarship in the name of the scientist and has commissioned a sculpture for the achievements made in the life sciences field.
Lithuania made news at the largest international competition of synthetic biology iGEM held on 13–22 November. The Vilnius-Lithuania iGEM team, which has been participating in this prestigious competition for six years, won the grand prize of the competition and became the best iGEM team in the world in 2020.

In order to complete this semester properly and as efficiently as possible, the Senate of Vilnius University (VU) has decided to carry out all study activities at VU remotely until the end of the spring semester.

World Health Organization has declared the infections COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus a pandemic, therefore the University has decided to preventively halt the study process for the upcoming 14 days starting from 13 of March until 27 of March with a possibility to extend the deadline if needed. Students and employees should study remotely via on-line measures - lectures and seminars will not be happening in the University's classes.
