On December 2, an exclusive symposium will take place at the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences in Vilnius to mark the 50th anniversary of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and five years of Lithuania’s membership in this prestigious organization. The event will feature a special guest – the EMBL Director General, Prof. Edith Heard. A unique exhibition will also be held, showcasing EMBL’s research and creative works by Lithuanian schoolchildren.

The Vilnius University Life Sciences Center (VU LSC) Council has elected Dr. Arvydas Lubys as the new Director of the Center during today’s session via a secret ballot. The new Director will assume his role upon approval by the VU Rector.

Brigita Vaigauskaitė-Mažeikienė has defended her thesis entitled "Identification of ovarian follicular fluid cells and molecular factors and investigation of their possible use in reproductive medicine" for the degree of Doctor of Science in Biochemistry.

The Council is a collegial self-governing body that elects the Director of the Center and determines the candidates and functions of the deputies, approves the Center's activity plan and annual reports, the Center's annual estimates of income and expenses and their implementation reports, evaluates the results of the research, experimental, social, technological development and innovation activities, studies and the quality and level of the Center's performance.

Philanthropists Irena and Algirdas Juozapavičius have allocated €1.3 million from the inheritance of their late son to the Vilnius University (VU) Foundation. In memory of their son, a €1 million sub-fund named after Mantvydas Juozapavičius (1976–2023) has been established within the VU Foundation. One hundred thousand euros each has been allocated to the VU Life Sciences Center sub-fund, the Professor Algis Petras Piskarskas sub-fund, and to strengthen other VU Foundation initiatives.

This groundbreaking research, led by Prof. Patrick Pausch and published in the journal Nature Communications, reveals a new way to silence genes akin to pressing a "pause" button on specific genetic instructions within cells.

On November 15 (Friday), Vilnius University will host a distinguished guest – Swedish biochemist, member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, former Chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry, and Professor of Theoretical Chemistry at Uppsala University, Johan Åqvist. The prominent biochemist will lecture at the Vilnius University Life Sciences Center (Saulėtekio al. 7, Room R401) at 15:00 titled “How Enzymes Adapt to the Cold?”
