Researchers from the Institute of Biotechnology at the Life Sciences Center of Vilnius University – Dalia Smalakytė, Audronė Rukšėnaitė, Dr. Giedrius Sasnauskas, Dr. Giedrė Tamulaitienė, and Dr. Gintautas Tamulaitis – have revealed the structure of the CRISPR-Cas "protein scissors" found in bacteria and provided mechanistic details on how they function. Their research article Filament Formation Activates Protease and Ring Nuclease Activities of CRISPR Lon-SAVED has been published in the prestigious and highly cited journal Molecular Cell.

Aistė Lekoveckaitė has defended her thesis entitled "Beetles (Insecta, Coleoptera) in the Second Decay Stage of the Most Common Lithuanian Deciduos Tree Species" for the degree of Doctor of Science in Zoology.

Dr. Jurgita Butkuvienė from Plant Genetics Laboratory of Vilnius University Life Sciences Center, together with colleagues from VU Botanical Garden Dr. Donatas Naužemys and Dr. Zofija Sinkevičienė from the Nature Research Centre Flora and Geobotany Laboratory, published a publication in the journal Aquatic Botany where the nature of the species Potamogeton × vilnensis was proven.

Two women researchers from Vilnius University (VU) Life Sciences Center (LSC) have been elected members of the Advisory Board of the  Research Council of Lithuania (RCL) for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Dr. Inga Matijošytė, Senior Researcher, was elected  Chair of the Commission, and Dr. Urtė Neniškytė became a member.

A delegation from the German research center DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron), a global leader in particle physics and accelerator technology, recently visited the Life Sciences Center (LSC).

Dr. Stephen Knox Jones, a scientist at Vilnius University's (VU) Life Sciences Center (LSC), and his laboratory have won a major award at the first-ever Life Sciences Progress Awards.
The VU scientist was named the winner in the Breakthrough Science category. Dr. Jones and his team received a €1.2 million grant from the European Research Council for a project to develop reliable and predictable gene editing tools.

A leading enzyme engineering company uses artificial intelligence (AI) to create new enzymes that do not exist in nature. According to experts, the application of AI for the development of proteins will be transformational, helping to solve fundamental problems related to their engineering.
