We study the effects of environmental factors, including temperature, pressure, pH, ions, macromolecular crowding, and the presence of various organic solvents, ligands, and biomolecules, on the aggregation kinetics, thermodynamic stability, and structural properties of amyloid-like fibrils. We believe that only a comprehensive understanding of all factors can provide a genuine understanding of the mechanisms of amyloid self-replication and, thus, proteinaceous infectivity.
