The nominal scholarships of Prof. Virginijus Šikšnys, a biochemist and one of the world pioneers of CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technology, is awarded for internationally recognised outstanding research results. This year, a EUR 10,000 scholarship established by the City of Vilnius has been awarded to VU PhD students Ugnė Kuliešiūtė and Jonas Juozapaitis.

Four Vilnius University (VU) female researchers have been awarded prestigious grants by the European Commission to finance scientific research programmes.

Some residents of Vilnius and Kaunas will soon find invitations to take part in an important new research in their mailboxes. Congratulations to Greta Jarockytė, who has defended her thesis "Investigation of the application of theranostic nanoparticles in oncological diagnostics and therapy" for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Biophysics. Scientific supervisor - Prof. Habil. Dr Ričardas Rotomskis.

Milda Narmontė defended her dissertation at the VU Life Sciences Center. Her thesis is entitled "High-resolution detection of genomic 5-hydroxymethylcytosine and its application to epigenetic studies of human diseases" for the degree of PhD in Biochemistry. Good news about Greta Leonavičienė, a young researcher at the VU Life Sciences Center: the first is that her research paper has won the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (LAS) Young Scientists and PhD Students' Research Paper Competition and a prize; the other is that she has succesfully defended her doctoral thesis!

This year, two young researchers from the VU LSC have been awarded prizes in the annual competition of Young Scientists and Doctoral Students of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (LAS).

This month, a delegation of Lithuanian researchers visited Taiwan's National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), other research institutions and science and technology centres to discuss bilateral cooperation and its development.

The Lithuanian Academy of Sciences has awarded the Lithuanian Science Prize to Prof. Linas Mažutis of the VU Life Sciences Center for his work 'Microfluidic Technologies in Single Cell and Biomolecule Research (2007–2021)'.

Dr Gytis Dudas, a virus researcher at Vilnius University Life Sciences Center (VU LSC), is one of the two young researchers at the VU LSC and one of 11 European researchers who received a grant from the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) to set up their own laboratory this year. This type of grant is awarded to young researchers, especially those who return to their home country to work for science. Dr Dudas will set up his laboratory as part of the project "Characterising metagenomically discovered orthomyxovirus surface proteins".

Dr Patrick Pausch, research professor and group leader at the Vilnius University Life Sciences Center (VU LSC)-European Molecular Biology Laboratory Partnership Institute (EMBL PI), has received a substantial European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) Installation Grant (IG). According to Dr Pausch, the installation grant scheme is invaluable for young scientists establishing their laboratories.

Today EMBO has announced the 11 winners of the 2023 EMBO Installation Grants, which provide multi-year funding for principal investigators to establish and grow their groups in participating countries. Among them, there are 2 Lithuanian representatives from Vilnius University (VU) Life Sciences Center (LSC): Dr Gytis Dudas (on the left, in the photo) and Dr Patrick Pausch. This EMBO funding scheme provides researchers in participating countries with several years of funding to set up and develop research teams.
