Four Vilnius University (VU) female researchers have been awarded prestigious grants by the European Commission to finance scientific research programmes.

Researcher of the VU Life Sciences Centre Dr Jorūnė Sakalauskaitė has won the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowships – MSCA PF competition. Prof. Virginijus Šikšnys is the supervisor of her research “The Molecular Suite of Shell Bio- & ArCHaeochromes – BACH”.

The project “Outcomes of Plant Invasions in Deadwood Fungi and Insect Communities – ENTWINE” of another researcher of the VU LSC Dr Maria Fernanda Torres Jimenez (scietific supervisor - Dr Virginija Podėnienė) will be financed by ERA (European Research Area). Projects that were highly rated during the general MSCA PF competition, but were not funded due to the call's budget limitations, automatically participate in this competition.

Two researchers from Ukraine - Dr Kateryna Latysh at the Faculty of Law (project “Digital Forensic, Open Data Source and Artificial Intelligence as Tools of International Security”, supervisor Assoc. Prof. Gabrielė Juodkaitė-Granskienė, the judge of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Lithuania) and Dr Oksana Bersirova at the Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences (project “Electrochemical Synthesis of Multifunctional (Magnetic and Electrocatalytic) Films of Nanostructured Rhenium Superalloys Deposits – EMERALD”, scientific supervisor Prof. Henrikas Cesiulis) – will also be able to continue their research started at the VU.
They were supported by the “MSCA4Ukraine” scholarship programme.

The EC support under the "MSCA4Ukraine" scholarship programme provides an opportunity for Ukrainian doctoral students and researchers who cannot study and work in their country due to the war to continue their activities in the EU member states and associated countries. This year it was awarded to 124 researchers from Ukraine.
In total, the EC will support the projects of 1235 of the most talented young researchers.
