Amorphophallus konjac, popularly known as “corpse flower”, bloomed in the LSC greenhouse last week. For the first few days, the flower fully justified its name, so it spent time on the balcony, but now the aroma is already very subdued, so this infrequently blooming exotic flower can be seen individually in the Western building of LSC, on the 4th floor, near laboratory V433.

On December 9, 2020, on the eve of the Nobel Prize awards ceremony Vilnius will celebrate it by honouring one of the most prominent Lithuanian pioneers in life sciences – Prof Virginijus Šikšnys – whose contributions led to important discoveries in the Nobel Prize-worthy CRISPR-Cas9 technology. Vilnius is funding a scholarship in the name of the scientist and has commissioned a sculpture for the achievements made in the life sciences field.
Lithuania made news at the largest international competition of synthetic biology iGEM held on 13–22 November. The Vilnius-Lithuania iGEM team, which has been participating in this prestigious competition for six years, won the grand prize of the competition and became the best iGEM team in the world in 2020.
