The Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education (SKVC) conducted an expert external evaluation of the first- and second-cycle Biochemistry study programmes offered by Vilnius University. Following the evaluation, the Biochemistry study programmes were accredited for a maximum period of seven years.
The external evaluation was conducted by an international panel comprising academic staff from foreign higher education institutions with experience in higher education management, a social partner, and a student representative. The evaluation covered all key areas of programme implementation, including study aims and learning outcomes, curriculum content, integration of research and studies, student admission and support, organisation of the study process, student achievement and graduate employability, academic staff, learning resources, as well as study quality management and public communication.
Key findings of the external evaluation
Vilnius University’s Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in Biochemistry were recognised as national leaders in the field. The evaluation confirmed that the content and quality of both programmes meet high international standards.
The programmes feature a well‑structured and coherent curriculum that balances core biochemistry subjects with other life sciences and general courses. A sufficient number of elective courses provides students with flexibility and opportunities to tailor their studies.
A strong emphasis is placed on research‑based learning. Students are involved in research projects from an early stage, aligned with their level of studies and supervised by highly qualified researchers. Graduates benefit from the programmes’ strong reputation in the labour market.
The evaluation also highlighted the supportive academic environment, characterised by approachable and dedicated teaching staff. Academic staff continuously develop their pedagogical and professional competences, ensuring high‑quality teaching. Teaching and learning facilities were assessed as modern, well-equipped and fully sufficient to support the study process.
