📅 16 October 2026 🕐 14:30 📍 Room R401, VU LSC
We are excited to welcome Mikel-Iceta Tena, a PhD candidate at CNB-CSIC (Spanish National Centre for Biotechnology) and SEMC-NYSBC (Simons Electron Microscopy Center, New York Structural Biology Center), to VU LSC!
Mikel works at the intersection of cryo-electron microscopy, computation, and scientific software development. His research focuses on computational methods and image processing for single-particle cryo-EM and cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET), including the development of new computational approaches and their integration into Scipion, a framework that brings together different software packages into reproducible structural biology workflows. Before starting his current PhD research, Mikel spent five years (2020–2025) as Systems Manager at CNB-CSIC. In that role, he worked on automated workflows capable of processing cryo-EM data in real time as it was being collected and helped design and deploy high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure for structural biology.
What will we hear about?
· Cryo-EM Single Particle Analysis (SPA) and Tomography: An introduction to the approaches and what we can learn from them.
· From raw images to biological information: An introduction to cryo-EM/cryo-ET data processing and the computational steps behind structure determination.
· Scipion How Scipion can connect different cryo-EM software packages and help build integrated, reproducible data-processing workflows.
· Instruct-ES Centre An introduction to the structural biology infrastructure and opportunities available through the Spanish Instruct Centre.
Whether you already work with cryo-EM, are considering using it in your research, or are simply curious about how thousands (or millions!) of noisy electron-microscopy images eventually become a 3D biological structure, this will be a great opportunity to see what happens behind the scenes.
Speaker: Mikel-Iceta Tena Affiliations: CNB-CSIC & SEMC-NYSBC Hosts: Dr Giedrė Ratkevičiūtė-Cooper & Dr Benjamin Cooper
See you all there!
