Preliminary Topic: Beyond Smell: transcriptomic analysis of immune functions in fish olfactory rosette

Short Description of the Internship Work: Fish primary olfactory organ is the olfactory rosette. Yet, new evidence shows that olfactory rosette is used not only for "sniffing", but also for protection and is a part of the immune system. Olfactory epithelium is a primary entry point for pathogens, including various viruses. Therefore, active protection can indeed be very beneficial. Various "OMIC" technologies, such as RNAseq (transcriptomics), allow us to investigate the importance of the immune system even in non-model organisms. During the practice, a student will get familiar with fish physiology, immune system composition, RNAseq, and will learn to utilize transcriptomic datasets. Basic understanding of bioinformatic pipelines or interest and the courage to learn are expected.

Qualification Requirements (Degree): BSc, MSc
