Equipment Information:

The Julabo FT902 is a two-stage compressor-based immersion cooler for low-temperature fluid cooling. Operating principle: the flexible cooling probe (64 cm length, Ø 1.5 cm) is immersed into the fluid to be cooled – the cold generated by an internal cascade refrigeration system (refrigerants R404A and R23) is transferred into the sample medium. Temperature is measured by an external Pt100 sensor and maintained at the set value by the PID controller. Applications: counter-cooling of open-bath thermostats, operation of heating circulators down to low temperatures, rapid cooling of reaction flasks or laboratory samples, operation of cold traps in vacuum systems (e.g. on rotary evaporators, sublimation equipment), and as a dry-ice replacement for temperatures down to −90 °C. The flexible probe is easily adapted to vessels of various geometries.

Information for the User:

  • A briefing by the responsible person is mandatory before use. Place the cooler on a stable surface with sufficient air circulation (at least 20 cm clearance from walls); do not obstruct ventilation openings. The flexible probe may be bent but must not be kinked or crushed. The cooling fluid must be suitable for the intended temperature range (e.g. ethanol down to −90 °C); do not use water below 0 °C. At low operating temperatures avoid skin contact with the probe – risk of cold burns. When using flammable solvents (ethanol, methanol), ensure good room ventilation and eliminate ignition sources. After use, allow the probe to warm up to ambient temperature; let any ice melt before re-immersing in a new solvent. The unit contains fluorinated greenhouse gases (R404A, R23) – service and disposal must be performed by certified technicians only.

 Additional Comments:

The FT902 is typically used as a counter-cooling device for heating circulators, enabling low operating temperatures without dry ice; it is also well suited as a cold trap for rotary evaporators, sublimation equipment and other vacuum systems. It is an economical alternative to tap-water cooling and an environmentally friendlier solution that reduces dry-ice consumption.
