Welcome to the virtual Thermo Fisher Day of Science on 10 November
On 10 November, Thermo Fisher Scientific will host its traditional annual event, the Thermo Fisher Day of Science. Now in its 11th year, this year's event invites you to come together virtually - to hear the latest scientific presentations from a virtual audience and, importantly, to have the opportunity to interact, ask questions and share ideas.
The guest speaker is Karen Nelson, Chief Scientific Officer at Thermo Fisher Scientific, a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, author of three books and more than 220 scientific publications. Ms Nelson will be presenting live from the USA, so her presentation is scheduled for the second half of the day.
The conference will be opened by Dr Tautvydas Karvelis, who will present a paper published in Nature in October 2021 by nine Vilnius University scientists, including Prof. Virginijus Šikšnys and Prof. Česlovas Venclovas, who will present a study on new genome editing tools. This is the first time that a paper by a team of Lithuanian scientists has been published in the world's top-ranked scientific journal.
Dr Aistė Jekabsone, Senior Scientist at LSMU, will reveal how brain cells and the airways communicate remotely: how respiratory cells, stimulated by viral infections (including SARS-CoV-2), produce exosomes that are readily transported into the brain.
Dr Ieva Plikusienė, Associate Professor at the VU Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences, will present how optical methods are being applied to SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus research and the advantages of such research. Dr. I. Plikusienė is the winner of the 2021 Loreal Baltic for Women in Science Young Talent Award.
Dr Stephen Jones, who this summer started leading a newly established research group at the VU Life Sciences Centre - EMBL Partnership Institute, will talk about new research directions. Dr. Jones came to Lithuania from the University of Texas at Austin (USA), where his group will develop and research new genome editing tools.
Povilas Kavaliauskas, a researcher at Weill Cornell Medical University (USA), who last year was named one of the "30 under 30" (most promising young researchers) by the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, will be presenting his collaborative projects with the US and Lithuania.
Traditionally, the Vilnius iGEM team, which is participating in the world's largest synthetic biology competition in the USA, will also present its latest project at the conference.
