On 25 September, a delegation from Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) visited the Vilnius University Life Sciences Center (VU LSC). The visit provided an opportunity to learn more about the research and study activities of both institutions, exchange experience, and discuss possible directions for further cooperation.

The delegation was led by Dr Pirjo Spuul, Director of the Department of Chemistry and Biotechnology at TalTech. She was joined by Prof. Indrek Koppel, Dr Annela Avarlaid, Dr Laura Tamberg, and Eliisabeth Kuldmaa, a Master’s student in Applied Chemistry and Biotechnology and TalTech Mobility Ambassador, who is spending the autumn semester of 2026 at Vilnius University as an exchange student.

The guests were welcomed by VU LSC Director Dr Arvydas Lubys, Head of the Doctoral School Prof. Daiva Baltriukienė, and Head of Marketing and Communications Kristina Černiauskienė.

During the meeting, the TalTech representatives were introduced to the structure of the VU LSC, its main research areas, study programmes, and scientific activities. The guests were particularly interested in molecular and cell biology, gene technology, and neuroscience. Considerable attention was also given to research funding, including Lithuania’s public funding model and the experience of the VU LSC.

During the visit, the TalTech representatives also learned more about research carried out by VU LSC scientists. Dr Aidas Alaburda presented the work of the Cellular Electrophysiology Group, which studies neuronal electrical signalling, neuronal development, and mechanisms of synaptic function. Dr Egidijus Šimoliūnas introduced research carried out at the Biological Models Unit on stem cells and their potential applications in regenerative medicine. Dr Vilmantas Pupkis presented the work of the Plant Cell Biophysics Research Group, which investigates physiological processes in plant cells and their responses to environmental factors. At the Bioanalysis Unit, headed by Dr Marius Dagys, the guests learned about the development of biosensors and bioanalytical systems.

The representatives of Tallinn University of Technology invited their VU LSC colleagues to visit TalTech, and it is hoped that this visit will provide a basis for further cooperation between the two institutions.

TalTech is Estonia’s only technical university, providing education and conducting research in engineering, technology, natural sciences, and social sciences. Its key areas of focus include clean and climate-friendly industry, construction, transport and energy, security and defence technologies, digitalisation, and the development of artificial intelligence.
