On 18 February, Vilnius University Life Sciences Center welcomed an esteemed guest, Phil Budden, Senior Lecturer at the MIT Sloan School of Management, who visited the Center.

Phil Budden, whose work focuses on innovation ecosystems and corporate innovation, was received by the Director of VU LSC, Dr. Arvydas Lubys, alongside Professor Eglė Lastauskienė, Advisor on International Relations, Dr. Julius Gagilas, Deputy Director for Business and Infrastructure, and Kristina Černiauskienė, Head of Marketing and Communications.

The visit commenced with a presentation introducing the Life Sciences Center’s strategic development. Representatives outlined new research directions, the ongoing study process, and the development of core research facilities. The discussion highlighted the centre’s ambition to strengthen its position further as a leading life sciences hub in the region.

Talks then turned to potential collaboration opportunities. Particular attention was given to how the MIT supports the commercialisation of research and fosters innovation-driven enterprises. Plans were discussed for future meetings to enable VU LSC to gain further insight into best practices for translating scientific discovery into business ventures.

Following the formal discussions, Phil Budden toured several of the centre’s laboratories. At the Cryo-Electron Microscopy (CryoEM) facility, Dr. Giedrė Tamulaitienė presented ongoing research in structural biology, and Prof. Linas Mažutis introduced their single-cell research techniques employing semi-permeable capsules. He also spoke about the commercial development of these technologies through the spin-out company Atrandi Biosciences, illustrating a successful example of science-driven entrepreneurship emerging from the university environment. The visit concluded in the biosensor laboratories, where Dr. Marius Dagys showed their innovative biosensor research projects and presented the activities of the associated company SensoLife, focused on developing advanced sensing solutions.

The visit marked an essential step toward strengthening international ties and exploring new pathways to translate high-level research into impactful innovation. Both sides expressed optimism about deepening cooperation in the future.
