On the afternoon of June 18, St. Johns' Church became a place where science, excitement, and pride came together – Vilnius University Life Sciences Center (VU LSC) held a solemn graduation ceremony for its bachelor’s and master’s degree graduates.

The ceremony was hosted by VU LSC Deputy Director for Studies Dr. Ingrida Prigodina Lukošienė, who, while congratulating the graduates, did not hide the fact that the path of studies had not been easy for everyone. But precisely this, she noted, gives the day its special meaning: “The studies have been completed, all exams passed, and excellent final theses written. We are especially proud of the large number of Magna cum laude and Cum laude diplomas.”

Congratulating the bachelor's graduates, Vilnius University Rector Prof. Rimvydas Petrauskas emphasized that we live in times of unprecedented change – and education empowers us to meet it:
“This is a time when everything is changing so fast that the human mind can barely keep up. But I am convinced – university studies prepare you to be more creative, courageous, and confident in facing challenges. You are taking an important step on your life journey – take it boldly and with confidence. And from here – reach for the stars. Congratulations on becoming part of the 446-year history of Vilnius University.”

VU LSC Director Dr. Arvydas Lubys, in his speech, encouraged graduates not only to rejoice in their achievements but also to continue deepening their knowledge and maintaining a critical perspective on the world:
“I sincerely congratulate each of you on this significant achievement – it is a personal accomplishment and a celebration for your loved ones, your families, and the university community. We live in a time when deeper understanding is crucial, so I wish you never to lose your curiosity, to maintain a critical view of the world, and to believe in what you do. Be courageous not only in making decisions but also in taking responsibility for them. Most importantly – I wish you success.”

Edita Šmergelienė, a representative of social partner Thermo Fisher Scientific, expressed her delight in being part of the celebration:
“I want to congratulate you, graduates, and your families and loved ones. Lithuania celebrates the 50th anniversary of modern biotechnology this year – we have already laid strong foundations, and now it’s your turn to move forward. We look forward to your contributions – your work will amaze the world.”

Representing the bachelor graduates, Povilas Kruopis, a graduate of the Molecular Biology program, shared his speech with imagination and self-irony:
“There is certainly a lot to celebrate, because it is under such relentless evolutionary pressure that people grow up to be persistent, ambitious, hardworking, and resilient to all of life’s storms.”

As the bachelor's graduates and their guests departed, the briefly quiet St. Johns' Church soon filled again, with excited master's graduates and their families and friends, eager to celebrate.

The master's graduates were welcomed by VU Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. (HP) Gintaras Valušis. His speech highlighted science as a unifying global force:
“Life sciences have shown that there are no borders between countries. I wish you to be beacons of science, spreading light from your Alma Mater. Don’t be afraid to dream–dream boldly and pursue your goals with determination.”

Addressing the master’s graduates, VU LSC Director Dr. Arvydas Lubys emphasized the importance of academic maturity:
“A diploma is not just an achievement. It is a sign that you can think strategically and solve complex problems. Master’s studies are not only a time of learning but also of knowledge creation. It’s a period when many of you understood what uncertainty means – when there is no single right answer – and what joy feels like when discovering something new. This kind of spiritual experience is what makes scientists true scientists.”

Speaking on behalf of the master’s graduates, biochemistry graduate Brigita Duchovska shared heartfelt words of thanks:
“These years of study were filled with hard work, friendships, and challenges. LSC helped shape not only professionals but also people. I wish everyone to find their place – where you will be truly happy.”

The solemn and joyful ceremony was accompanied not only by words of congratulations but also by musical gifts – performances by soloist Nerijus Masevičius and organist Vidas Pinkevičius filled the church with a festive spirit and the essence of the university, breathing long-standing academic tradition.

This year’s VU Life Sciences Center graduation ceremony saw the awarding of 209 bachelor’s diplomas (including 11 Magna cum laude and 12 Cum laude) and 72 master’s diplomas (including 11 Magna cum laude and 6 Cum laude). These numbers speak volumes – they reflect the personal determination of the students and the strength of the VU LSC academic community. We sincerely congratulate the graduates and wish them success in the next stage of their journey!
