The President of the Republic of Malta, Dr. George William Vella, together with an official delegation, visited the Life Sciences Center (LSC) of Vilnius University. The President met with VU Vice-Rector and Pro-Rector for Research, Prof. Edita Sužiedėlienė, VU Life Sciences Center researchers Prof. Virginijus Šikšnys, Dr. Urtė Neniškytė, and Prof. Eglė Lastauskienė, Chairwoman of the Vilnius University Senate and Director of the Institute of Biosciences at the VU LSC. Prof. Eglė Lastauskienė presented the Center, studies as well as the areas of research conducted.
The President of Malta, who has PhD in Medicine, was interested in the opportunities for scientific cooperation between Malta and Lithuania.
The guests visited the laboratories of the Department of Immunology, where Prof. Aurelija Žvirblienė discussed the SARS-CoV-2 virus and other research being carried out.
Before leaving, the President of Malta visited the VU LCS Museum of Zoology.
Dr. Grita Skujienė, the head of the museum, presented the ERASMUS+ cooperation project LINNEO between Vilnius University (Museum of Zoology and the Botanical Garden, Gedimino Miesto Mokykla School), Malta (Newark School, Be2Bit Ltd.) and Italy (Costa Edutainment S.P.A.; Comprensivo Staglieno Instituto, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, SI4LIFE companies). This project aims to create an online educational platform for innovation in the natural sciences, containing information from the VU Museum of Zoology, the Botanical Garden, and the Italian Maritime Museum, to be used in science and biology lessons. The innovation of the project will be the development of targeted online games to improve the learning of the lesson material, developed by Be2Bit Ltd based on the material provided by VU LSC.
