To celebrate European Biotech Week 2023, students of the Master's degree programme in Molecular Biotechnology at VU LSC visited two biotechnology companies based in Lithuania - AB Amilina Roquette R&D Department and Bioenergy LT. Both companies are members of the Lithuanian Biotechnology Association LithuaniaBIO.

The Roquette Group company Roquette Amilina is one of the largest manufacturing companies in northern Europe, producing products from wheat by deep processing for food, paper, feed and other industries. Roquette is a family-owned global leader in plant-based ingredients, a pioneer in plant proteins and a leading supplier of pharmaceutical excipients. Founded in 1933, the Group is now present in more than a 100 countries, with an annual turnover of around €5 billion and over 8,000 employees worldwide. One of the company's technologies under development is the enzymatic production of syrup from starch.

The second company visited by the Master's students is Bioenergy LT, founded in 2013, which produces micro-organisms used as bio fertilisers to replace chemical fertilisers. Using advanced production technologies, the company produces products designed to stimulate soil bioactivity, increase plant productivity and ensure quality harvests. The microorganisms in the products are naturally occurring and not genetically modified. Bioenergy LT works closely with universities in Lithuania, and abroad and its products are sold throughout Europe and beyond.

The European Biotechnology Week has been held annually during the last week of September since 2013.
