The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) Information Day at the Life Sciences Center of Vilnius University introduced Lithuanian scientists to this international scientific institution and the opportunities for cooperation with it.

Participants from Vilnius University hospital Santaros klinikos, the National Cancer Institute, the Centre for Innovative Medicine, the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, the Nature Research Centre and other scientific institutions were introduced to the research being carried out at the EMBL and to the services offered by the Open Access Centres.

Plamena Markova, EMBL's Head of International Relations, presented the organisation itself, its mission and vision.

Ewan Birney, EMBL Deputy Director General and Joint Director of EMBL-EBI, gave a presentation on research science, experimental and computational service and training opportunities.

Mr Rainer Peppercock, EMBL Director of Scientific Core Facilities and Scientific Services, introduced EMBL's core facilities and scientific services.

Thomas Schneider, Joint Head of Research Infrastructures, Group Leader and Senior Scientist, EMBL Hamburg, presented EMBL's services for structural biology.

Cornelius Gross, Interim Head of EMBL Rome, Group Leader, presented EMBL Rome and its Research and Service linking Epigenetics & Neurobiology.

James Sawitzke, Head of Genetic & Viral Engineering Facility, EMBL Rome, presented the genetic and viral engineering facilities and the development of advanced cloning techniques.

Monika Lachner, EMBL Head of Internal Scientific Training and Dean of Graduate Studies at EMBL, talked about the postdoctoral and visiting scientist programmes and the opportunities for young scientists.

Alessandro Barenghi, Research Fellow (ARISE), Genetic & Viral Engineering Facility, EMBL Rome, gave a scientific lecture on improved genome editing in cells and embryos, on a novel approach for one-step delivery of CRISPR components using rAAVs.

Marina Sanaki-Matsumiya, a postdoctoral Fellow in Miki Ebisuya Group, EMBL Barcelona, presented a 3D embryonic organoid for somitogenesis from human pluripotent stem cells.

Lithuania's accession to EMBL in 2019 has opened up opportunities for researchers and students to benefit from the full range of EMBL and EMBO programmes, to attend conferences and courses, and to apply for competitive project funding, often under facilitated conditions.
