The Professor Virginijus Šikšnys' Scholarship – for doctoral students in life sciences
Established by the city of Vilnius and the Vilnius University (VU) Life Sciences Center, the Professor Virginijus Šikšnys' Scholarship is awarded to third-cycle students for internationally recognised research results in order to encourage these students to continue their research in expanding the knowledge boundaries of life processes, using scientific knowledge to create human well-being, and preserving environmental sustainability and diversity.
The scholarship is awarded once a year. The scholarship amount is EUR 10,000. In exceptional cases where there are two equal candidates, two scholarships may be awarded of EUR 5,000 each.
The scholarship competition is announced every year by 15 November. Applications are accepted until 15 December. The recipient of the scholarship is selected by 31 January.
The candidates for the scholarships are selected by an Evaluation Committee formed by the Director of the VU Life Sciences Center.
The competition is open to all third-cycle students (regardless of citizenship) who are enrolled at the VU Life Sciences Center and have achieved significant research results, e.g. who have published their research outcomes in international scientific journals with a Clarivate Analytics citation index and/or have filed international patent applications.
The bases and principles of awarding the scholarship are established in the Professor Virginijus Šikšnys' Scholarship Regulations and in the scholarship contract.
